Since winter has so far brought us several days of very rainy weather, the children have had some extremely wet puddle fun outdoors along with a little more time indoors than usual. Fortunately, Miss Katy and the parent volunteers have been resourceful about coming up with creative inside activities to keep the little ones happy and engaged on the those dreary days.

Winter Gently Approaches

With these unseasonally warm late fall days, the children have enjoyed as much outdoor time as possible. Mixed with the exciting indoor activity of making wooden bead decorations for their classroom’s live holiday pine tree has been the fun of crunching about in the crackling dry leaves that have fallen on the ground in the garden area and playground.
A Healthy, Earth-Friendly Fundraiser!
Online you can order a small, medium or large bin of organic produce and other food items from Mother Earth Produce and they will deliver it to your front door. Bins cost $26-$50, depending on size. Along with the food, participants will have access to recipes provided by Asheville-area organizations and businesses that support the local food movement. There is no long-term commitment – participants buy as few or as many bins as they choose – and orders can be customized.
Participants must live within 60 miles of Asheville. For the first 100 veggie bins that are ordered using the school code GM954, Grow With Me preschool will receive $4 per bin. After that, the school earns $2 per bin through May 31, 2013. Bins are the same price whether you order with the code or without – Mother Earth Produce donates part of the bin cost to Grow With Me.
For details on Mother Earth Produce or to participate in the fundraiser, go to www.MotherEarthProduce.com, register and order your bin. Upon check out, type the code “GM954” into the “Enter Coupon Code” line and click “Submit Coupon.” So easy! We hope you will participate!
Rhythm of the Day
The children know that important transitions in the daily routine (i.e. moving from the classroom to the garden area, or preparing for snack) are marked by well-loved songs sung by Miss Katy and the classroom parents. Children join in with their own voices as they clean up toys or put on their shoes for outside play.
Everyone knows that on Wednesdays bread dough is mixed and kneaded, and every Thursday the bread they made will be eaten for snack. They even look forward to washing their napkins in the washtub and hanging them to dry on Thursdays.
Being able to count on this gentle rhythm makes school a safe and comforting place for our littles, and gives them the confidence to be bold explorers of the big, wide world.
Openings
I sat down to compose a post about the few remaining openings in our program this fall, but upon typing the title of the post, Openings, I found myself thinking instead about the power and beauty in remaining open; in our hearts, our minds and our lives. As I prepare myself, my family and our classroom for the beginning of our school year, I am also remaining open and holding space for the new children who will be joining me on this journey. Though lists have been made; of supplies to purchase, things needing to be made ready, stories to tell, activities to do, I know that the joy of learning and working with children doesn’t involve plans or lists, but comes when we’re present and open to them, to their spontaneity, to the wonder they see with their young eyes, to their rich, deep imaginations, to their needs. That’s when magic happens!
Our program for 3-5 year old children begins September 4th. We still have spaces available. We hope you’ll spend some time reading more about our program. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Grow With Me also offers a Parent led Play group for 2-3 year old children on Monday mornings. For more information, please contact Rebecca Lance at redbecca59@gmail.com.
Spring Growth at Grow With Me
Those seeds, so tenderly nurtured and planted this winter and early spring, are growing! We have held a couple of open houses and welcomed some wonderful new families into the Grow With Me Cooperative! Together, we have been busy.
Last weekend, under sunny, blue skies, many Grow With Me families came together to enhance our outdoor playspace. We bravely pulled poison ivy, cut back thorns and limbs to create a child-sized tunnel through a ravine, where the kids love to run, along with their imaginations. We moved our garden boxes to a sunnier patch where they await more soil and plants! From a neighbor’s tree, we acquired a mound of stumps, which we rolled and carried to create a sand pit. At the end of our morning’s work, we enjoyed a potluck lunch and our children’s laughter as they jumped around on the stumps and dug in the sand pit we had just created, together.
This Saturday, June 2nd, we’ll host another Open House and welcome interested families to join us from 10:30 until noon! We recommend reading our handbook to learn more about our program. If you have additional questions, please contact us via our contact page or by phone, 337-4710.
We have also begun a second parent-led playgroup for 2 and 3 year olds. The playgroup will meet this summer on Tuesdays from 10-12 and is led by parents who rotate through the roles of lead, snack and clean-up. One week you stay with your child and the next, you drop them off. If you are interested in joining this group, or would like more information, please email us via our contact page.
May your gardens, projects and dreams also grow strongly this spring!
Sowing Seeds for Fall

Still Enrolling for the Fall
Welcome! We are still enrolling for the fall 2011-2012 school year, which will begin September 6th.
Our program, inspired by the Waldorf values of Reverence, Repetition and Rhythm, strives to provide a gentle transition for children, ages 3-6, from the home to a group environment.
Grow With Me Cooperative is a community of young children and parents seeking to create a cooperative learning program that facilitates social, spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual growth in a loving, supportive atmosphere. We nurture a respect for self, others, and nature, while providing a safe environment for our children to stretch their imaginations and to explore their interests.
Our cooperative teaching environment offers children a continuous thread of experience, bridging school and home, fosters a deeper relationship between parent and child and helps families better integrate their child’s personal needs and interests into their school environment.
We believe children have innate wisdom, and that it is our responsibility to honor and cultivate this power within children. Therefore, imagination and play experience are keys to the young child’s development at GWM.
Our program, conveniently located in East Asheville, also offers:
~ trained teachers
~ quality programing
~ affordable tuition
~ natural play materials
~ arts & crafts
~ cooking projects
~ circle time
~ storytelling
~ exceptional classroom & outdoor play spaces
Our program meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9-12:30.
